Elm Cottage
Mullion, Cornwall
In collaboration with RA-Studio, this project comprises a renovation and extension to an existing traditional two-storey cottage, situated among open fields near Mullion on the Lizard peninsula in south Cornwall. The proposal involves the renovation of the existing two-bedroom home and the replacement of a rear single-storey extension with a two-storey one, extending perpendicular into the garden.
On the ground floor, a newly renovated outdoor entry space leads to the home where a timber and glass pergola provides cover. The entrance runs between a utility and WC into an open-plan kitchen and dining area where a large picture window frames the garden.
A new doorway off the first-floor landing connects into the primary suite, where vaulted ceilings and large rooflights allow plenty of natural light in throughout the day. With three distinct vistas, the room offers a peaceful sense of space and quiet views of the surrounding trees.
The material palette includes lime render on the ground floor and vertical charred timber cladding above, topped with a natural slate roof. While the extension provides a contemporary contrast to the original cottage – boasting an improved thermal envelope and high-performance glazing – the use of these traditional finishes ensures the building sits comfortably within its rural context, modernising the home while respecting the character of the Cornish landscape.
