Single-Storey Family Home
Fredericksburg, Texas
This concept design explores a contemporary single-storey family home set within the warm landscape of Fredericksburg, Texas. At 3,000 sqft (280 m²), the proposal balances openness and comfort, creating a home that encourages social interaction while maintaining spaces for privacy and retreat.
At its centre is a large open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area designed to foster a sense of community. The kitchen includes a generous walk-in pantry, while a utility room with its own outdoor access adds convenience for family life. Floor-to-ceiling glazing opens the living spaces onto a south-facing patio with swimming pool, where a pergola provides shade and extends the home’s useable space throughout the seasons.
The primary bedroom suite is oriented to capture three distinct vistas, with corner sliding doors framing views of the patio and pool. It features a spacious walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom, combining comfort with a strong connection to the landscape. Behind the central fireplace, a plant room and a dedicated office are tucked away, the latter enjoying its own direct access to the patio.
A key focus of the design process was the roof. Studies explored varied pitches, overhangs, and materials – from corrugated metal sheeting to standing seam zinc – to understand how roof form shapes character, scale, and the play of light and shadow.
Externally, the palette of locally sourced stone and vertical timber siding grounds the house within its setting, offering warmth, tactility, and a sense of permanence. Together, these elements define a home that feels contemporary, practical, and deeply rooted in its landscape.
