Wheal Plenty Retreat
Redruth, Cornwall
Set within a rural and semi-remote landscape of open fields and mature trees on the outskirts of Redruth, in collaboration with RA-Studio, this project replaces a redundant single-storey outbuilding with a considered and crafted home extension that brings new life to the edge of an existing dwelling.
The existing 12-metre, 50m² garage and workshop structure is demolished to make way for a replacement extension of similar scale – a decision rooted in restraint, working within the footprint of what was already there rather than imposing further upon the land.
The interior unfolds as a generous open-plan living space organised across three loosely defined zones: a living area with fireplace, a dining space, and a quieter snug tucked at the far end. Rather than hard divisions, the sequence of spaces is gently mediated by open shelving, allowing light, air, and the eye to travel freely through the length of the room.
The extension is designed to feel distinct from the existing home – taller, lighter, and more open. Ceilings rise to the full apex of the roofline, and six-metre-wide glazed sliding doors either side of the living area blur the boundary between inside and out, connecting the space directly to the garden. The overall effect is one of airiness and light – a deliberate contrast to the lower, more enclosed rooms of the house.
Externally, the building speaks the language of its rural setting. Vertical charred timber cladding gives the elevation a quietly elemental quality – dark, textured, and deeply rooted in the tradition of agricultural buildings found across the Cornish countryside. A corrugated roof reinforces this vernacular sensibility while remaining thoroughly contemporary in its execution. Solar panels to the south-facing roof pitch complete the design, embedding a quiet environmental responsibility into the fabric of the building.
The result is an extension that feels at once new and entirely at home – grounded in its landscape, generous in its light, and unhurried in its atmosphere.
