Swinnate Road
Arnside, Cumbria
Swinnate Road is a two-storey renovation project focused on enhancing the home’s energy performance and reconfiguring the existing floor plan, currently divided into small, disconnected rooms. The client also aimed to maximise natural light throughout the dwelling.
Several interventions were explored, including a timber-clad extension at the rear that integrates the existing kitchen and dining rooms into a spacious, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living that opens out into the garden. Ample glazing including roof lights have been incorporated to encourage natural light into this northerly lying space.
A second intervention is a south-facing garden room designed to welcome guests. This multifunctional area provides storage for coats and shoes and serves as a sunlit retreat. Large sliding windows create a connection to the living room, enhancing flexibility and improving comfort throughout the home.
To further enhance thermal performance and aesthetics, the existing home, previously finished in roughcast, has been wrapped in external wall insulation (EWI), rendered, and painted white, giving it a fresh, modern look.
