Barn Conversion & Extension
Lanlivery, Cornwall
In collaboration with RA-Studio, this project involves the restoration of a 45m² single-storey stone barn and the addition of a contemporary two-storey volume. Together, they form a 130m² three-bedroom family home rooted in its rural context, designed with a focus on longevity and significantly improved thermal performance.
Entrance is gained through a glass vestibule that bridges the original structure and the new addition – with coats storage and bench for taking off your wellies. While the barn houses two bedrooms and a family bathroom, the new wing features a double-height dining and living area with expansive westerly views across the pasture, and a mezzanine primary suite which sits above the open-plan kitchen and pantry.
The material palette – locally sourced stone and vertical timber cladding – is complemented by a standing seam metal roof and galvanized steel rainwater goods, honouring the traditional farm aesthetic through a modern architectural language. Improved levels of insulation and high-performance doors and windows ensure the home is appropriately energy-efficient.
