Treetops
Portreath, Cornwall
Treetops is a two-storey, 200 sqm dwelling, located at the top of a hill overlooking the Cornish village of Portreath. The advantageous positioning and orientation ensues stunning views out over the village and sea to the west where the sun sets in the evening.
The clients wanted to increase the internal floor area of their existing bungalow to help comfortably accommodate their growing family. In addition, a conscientious approach was made to ensure the extension did not impose on neighbouring properties.
Accordingly, the proposal comprises a first floor with a shallow-pitched roof which maintains a low-lying form but still provides the clients with a generous and elevated living space.
As one enters, you are met by a double-height hallway that brings an element of grandeur and spaciousness to the home. The existing ground floor was partly redesigned to accommodate a hall and stairwell, four bedrooms, a bathroom, a utility and a snug. The proposed first floor comprises an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space with a balcony, a pantry, and a WC.
The form of the proposed first-floor extension is a simple elongated volume that sits on top of the existing bungalow. A locally-sourced cedar was chosen to clad the first floor which will weather to a silvery-grey, helping to integrate the building better with its natural setting, whilst also reducing the building's carbon footprint.
